[Peace-discuss] Respect for Teacher's Actions

I sent the letter below to the News-Gazette: 

I want to show my respect for the action taken by Kathleen Smith,
mathematics teacher at Champaign Central High School, who resigned in
protest over the teaching and testing methods being imposed by the
federal No Child Left Behind legislation. At a time when so few
politicians, business and church figures are willing to take
responsibility for the great range of problems our society is currently
facing she had the integrity to speak out about the "moral dilemma" the
government's policy has forced upon her. Prisoners are being tortured
and humiliated in our name, children have been sexually abused in their
churches, businesses are engaging in the highest levels of fraud and
deceit -- and nobody resigns in an act of contrition or an attempt to
restore justice. But a local mathematics teacher with an apparantly
examplary record has taken that step out of frustration and anger. Let's
hope it makes a difference.
