3. Mongoose redux?

This year’s version of Operation Mongoose could be the report leaked  
out of the CIA this week which claims that President Fidel Castro is  
suffering from Parkinson’s disease. President Castro responded with a  
five-hour address in Havana before an audience of college students.  
Here is how Mary Murray of NBC News, a respected journalist with a  
long tenure in Cuba, reported the event:

Castro stood at the podium for more than five hours, his posture  
alone belying the CIA assessment that his health was failing. Lucid  
and animated, Castro exhibited no Parkinson’s symptoms of tremors or  
shaking. Instead, as the night wore on, the Cuban leader became more  
energetic.

This is certainly compelling evidence that the CIA is still having  
trouble not only with leaks (this one probably won’t get  
investigated) but also with its underlying intelligence. We can only  
suppose that this story – accurate or not – was leaked to provoke  
consternation in Cuba over Castro’s health. At least it got a good  
laugh.
