AWARE Minutes

November 27, 2005

Facilitator: Durl Kruse

Minutes: David Green

Time: Bob Illyes

1. News of the Week (Carl Estabrook, posted
separately)

2. Introductions: 18-19 present

3. New Ideas:

Anna Pillar: Jewish activist with experience in
occupied territories will be visiting some time in
April, perhaps for AWARE Presents.

Bob Illyes: has been researching the history of AWARE.

Ricky Baldwin: Proposes an informative session on
Haiti; some information and perhaps a proposal for an
event will be discussed next week.

Peace wrist bands: Linda Evans will be ordering
something fashionable

4. Working groups:

1. Finances (Linda Evans): $2438

2. Lincoln Mall, Peace Bazaar (Durl Kruse, Jan Kruse,
David Green): We will be tabling from 8 to 1 at
Lincoln Square, 9 to 3 at the Peace Bazaar on
Saturday. Volunteers are needed.

3. Main Event (Ricky Baldwin): This Saturday, 2 to 4;
a volunteer is needed to pick up signs at 4:00.

4. Counter-recruitment (Kruses and Randall Cotton):
After a cold Friday, a warmer Saturday brought a Main
Event-like atmosphere to the corner of Kirby and First
St. Over a thousand pieces of counter-recruitment and
more general antiwar literature were distributed
during the 2 days. Thanks especially to the Kruses,
Randall Cotton, and May (the person, not the month).
The appropriate officials were duly annoyed by these
efforts, which also attracted Mennonites, a local
professor, and Jesse Francis (the one-man church
presence). Well done! It was suggested that a thank
you note to the police is in order, for assuring our
right to the public sidewalk.

5. Church presence (Karen Medina, Kruses): A rainy
Sunday morning brought 6 or 8 out-reachers to
non-members of the choir to St. John’s Lutheran Church
on Mattis Ave. Responses were appropriately mixed, and
a meeting with church staff may be arranged. It was
agreed, however, that offers of meetings should not
be allowed to substitute for a presence. Again, prior
contact with police regarding our rights to stand on
public property proved to be helpful. Coverage based
on a prior meeting with Paul Wood was in Sunday’s
News-Gazette, Page A-2, with photo; AWAREniks were
interested to discover that Mort Brussel (long
suspected of being an atheist) has been designated as
de facto Minister for Religious Affairs. Channel 15
also covered this presence on the Sunday evening news.
Again, well done! Next Sunday’s presence will be at
Tim Johnson’s 1st Christian Church (not official
name), 3601 S. Staley Road. Staley is one mile west of
Duncan, and the church is about 1 mile south of
Windsor Road. Time: 9:45 to 10:45.

6. WRFU: An AWARE time slot is in the works; the form
needs to be filled out first.

5. Events of the Past Week: Already discussed

6. Upcoming Events:

Urbana City Council antiwar resolution proposal: There
will be a working group meeting at Gary and Jamie
Storm’s house, 304 E. George Huff Drive on Tuesday
(Nov. 29th), 7 p.m. This group may join with Sharon
Dorsey’s social action committee at St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church.

AWARE Presents: Tuesday (Nov. 29th), United Church of
Christ, 7 p.m., Voices from Iraq, Mohammed al-Heeti,
Bushra al-Heeti, and Talha al-Fayeed.

Jobs for Justice: (Bob Wahlfeldt, Socialist Forum)
will be protesting at the Champaign Wal-Mart (north
Prospect), December 17th. There will be sign-making at
the IMC on December 13th.
