Dear AWARE:

I am contacting you to request the co-sponsorship of your organization for
an upcoming event at the Illinois Disciples Foundation. As a way to expand
on the issues of our last installment in this semesters Human Rights Film
Series, "The Torture Question" we would like to announce this upcoming
event.

***********************************************
"Breaking the Silence on Torture: Survivor and
Activist Dong Tizon Speaks Out."

Thursday, April 20th
7pm to 9pm
at the Illinois Disciples Foundation
***********************************************

Dong is a Filipino activist who was imprisoned and tortured under the
Marcos regime for his activism with the rural poor community in the
Philippines. He is currently the Assistant Director of the Torture
Abolition Survivors Support Committee (TASSC) International.

Orlando Tizon was arrested on September 21, 1982 in Davao City,
Philippines, during the regime of President Marcos for his activities as a
community organizer working with the rural poor in the Philippines.

In the first three weeks of his imprisonment he was kept blindfolded and
incommunicado in a military camp. He suffered beatings, endless
interrogations, mock execution and solitary confinement during his
imprisonment.

He was released in April 1986 after the Marcos regime collapsed.

Subsequently he earned a doctorate in sociology. He has been with TASSC
International since 2000 and is presently the Assistant Director.

Please respond to this message if AWARE would like to lend its
name in co-sponsorship to this event with Dong Tizon. As a co-sponsor we
ask that you help to publcize the event and encourage your supporters and
members to attend.

To make it onto the first round of publicity, please respond by Wednesday,
April 5th.

We will continue to accept co-sponsorships until Wednesday, April 12th.

As always, a monetary donation is not required for co-sponsorship, but we
at IDF appreciate any support that you are willing and able to give.
Please send your responses to Aaron Smith at redherng at shout.net or call
the IDF office at 352-8721. Feel free to contact me for more information
about the event.

More detailed information will be available in the coming weeks. I hope
to hear from you soon, and I hope you will help us with this important
event.

In Struggle,
Jen and Aaron
