Courtwatching Opportunities This Week

There are court dates this week for several important cases we have
been following.

One of the most important is the coroner's inquest for Quentin Larry,
who died of an alleged heart attack in the county jail over Memorial
Day weekend. The inquest will be Thursday, August 24, 11:15 am at the
Urbana Civic Center, 108 E. Water (North of Main behind downtown
jail). We will be there to offer comfort and support to the Larry
family.

Two rogue police officers are in court this coming week.

Ryan Garrett, who is charged with official misconduct, will be in
court for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, August 23 at 11 am in
courtroom B. Garrett is charged with threatening his estranged wife's
boyfriend with the comment, "Watch your back. I'm a cop." In another
incident, Garrett called a fellow police officer to do a DUI on
Garrett's wife, who it was found was not drunk.

William Alan Myers, who is charged with aggravated battery and
obstruction of justice, is expected to enter a plea bargain on Friday,
August 25 at 1:30 pm in courtroom B. Myers abuses are particularly
heinous. He was found using a Taser on at least 4 individuals. It
has also been alleged that he has tortured inmates. One man was
placed in a restraint chair, a hood was placed over him, and Myers
punched him in the head repeatedly.

Another man being helped by Jeanine, a paralegal who has visited Court
Watch meetings several times, goes to court Wednesday, August 23 at 9
am in Courtroom B. He has been told by Judge Difanis he faces 6 years
for obstruction of justice. The man was illegally stopped and
questioned by Champaign officers. He is in court for giving the wrong
name to the police.

See you at the courthouse.

Peace, BD
