Here are some interesting events in Bloomington/Normal (1 hour drive away). IWU
is Illinois Wesleyan University (and note that "Beckman Auditorium" is not *our*
Beckman auditorium - it's on the IWU campus). I'm forwarding this from the
Bloomington/Normal Citizens for Peace and Justice mailing list. Jan and Carrol
Cox from BNCPJ visited an AWARE meeting a while back.

Subject: [BNCPJ] Barbara Ehrenreich at IWU Sept 6

Barbara Ehrenreich will be at IWU next Wednesday. And some info on progressive
movies in town to see, below. Also, the next issue, for Sept. 6, of the Indy
will focus on the 9/11 anniversary, if anyone has any submissions.

Barbara Ehrenreich, the acclaimed author whose numerous books include the
bestseller Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America, will deliver an
address titled "Nickel and Dimed in America: A Minimum Wage Existence" at
Illinois Wesleyan University's President's Convocation on Wednesday, Sept. 6,
at 11 a.m. in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall (1210 Park St.,
Bloomington). Free and open to the public. Booksigning at 10am at the IWU
Bookstore.

Other events tied to the themes of Nickel and Dimed are planned during the
academic year. These include a theatrical adaptation of Nickel and Dimed to be
performed in the E. Melba Johnson Kirkpatrick Laboratory Theatre Feb. 27-March
3, and a discussion panel on living wages in Central Illinois scheduled
Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. in Beckman Auditorium, The Ames Library. The
panel, titled "The Benefits and Costs of a Living Wage in Central Illinois,"
will include panelists Todd Kumler, a senior economics major; Jean Pretz,
assistant professor of psychology; Steven Purcell, alderman for Bloomington's
Ward 7; and Steve Stockton, mayor of Bloomington.

Also on Wed. Sept 6, at 7pm in the Bone Student Center Ballroom is Darfur
Diaries (darfurdiaries.org), a documentary about Darfur with a discussion with
the filmmaker. Free and open to all.
This is the start of the Social Justice Movie Series at ISU, the first Wednesday
of every month. If you have suggestions for movies, let us know.

Another progressive movie being shown at IWU:
An Inconvenient Truth
Friday, September 8
8 p.m. & 11 p.m.
IWU Hansen Student Center
Directed by Davis Guggenheim, this award-winning documentary highlights Al Gore
and his years of experience studying the problems (and solutions) of global
warming. The film is rated PG. Sponsored by the Office of Student Activities,
this event is free and open to the public.

Incidentally, Iraq for Sale (iraqforsale.org) will be having free showings Oct.
8-14 around the country. If the Oct. BNCPJ meeting is Oct. 8, you could show
the movie there (or have a special showing). I would also like to have someone
organize a showing at ISU (and maybe IWU), if anyone is interested. Right now,
the nearest showing of the movie is Pekin. Just don't schedule anything for
Oct. 12, because Global Review will be showing the documentary "I"
(ithefilm.com) about Argentina Indymedia) and discussion with the filmmakers.
