URBANA – Local peace activists are flooding the post-Christmas mail with
calls for withdrawal from Iraq.

A coalition that includes church groups like the Quakers and political
forces like the Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort coordinated sending more than a
thousand postcards bearing peace messages to Illinois senators Barack Obama
and Dick Durbin, both Democrats, as well as Urbana Republican U.S. Rep. Tim
Johnson.

Ricky Baldwin, spokesman for the effort, said about 800 cards were written
at one meeting.

"We'll have another 200 to 300 in the mail" today, Baldwin said.

He said the postcard messages range from longer notes urging a halt to
funding for the war, except for withdrawal costs, to simply "Bring the
troops home now!"

Most of the costs of the effort are borne by a donation drive, Baldwin said.

A Jan. 27 march on Washington is also scheduled, Baldwin said.

The march had been planned for March, he said, but peace activists were so
encouraged by mid-term election results that they decided to move it up.
