Iraq Civil War
The sectarian violence in the aftermath of the mosque bombing in Iraq
clearly exposed the fact that partisan militias wield the real power
in that country. While the politicians have retreated from their
initial reaction to suspend talks to form a new government, their
long-term relevance has always been questionable at best. Meanwhile,
even leading American conservatives have begun to concede the
obvious. William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of the National Review, has
flatly stated: 'One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq
has failed.' While ABC News commentator George Will says: 'This is a
civil war.' He goes on to explain: 'As long as the militias are out
there, the existence of an Iraqi government is questionable. Think of
Los Angeles. If Los Angeles said the Bloods and the Crips are going
to be tolerated, they're going to be armed and police their areas and
enforce the law in certain areas, what sense would Los Angeles have
of government?' Now, if only our conservative friends would come to
see this failure for what it is -- the inevitable result of a war of
aggression and occupation that was wrong from the start. Governors
now say the Iraq war is hurting our own National Guard readiness here
at home, and a new Zogby poll shows U.S. troops in Iraq say it is
time to bring them home. As the curfew ends, violence resumes in
Iraq, after 1,300 already killed last week. Meanwhile, Iran continues
to gain influence in the region due to U.S. policies.

Ending The War
20/20 Vision has come out with an email action asking Congress to
consider the bipartisan Homeward Bound withdrawal bill, while Peace
Action has added an email action to oppose the so-called supplemental
funding for the Iraq war. Veterans and hurricane survivors groups are
holding a 'Walkin to New Orleans' march to highlight the connection
between the wasteful Iraq war and the failure of our government to
respond to human needs at home. While another coalition is organizing
weekly protests outside the homes of House members, calling for an
end to the Iraq war and linking this to impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

Other Actions
Both, FCNL and CLW have email actions telling Congress to oppose the
new nuclear deal with India, while WagingPeace highlights the nuclear
issue on the 60th anniversary of Marshall Islands tests. Africa
Action and Million Voices for Darfur have new emails pressing Bush to
keep his commitments there, while Oxfam America asks Congress to
support Darfur funding. U.N. Association has an email campaign to
educate Congress about reform progress. Human Rights First has an
email calling on Bush to adopt a 'zero tolerance' policy on torture
and abuse. CCR-NY has an email calling on Congress to begin
impeachment. NCPTF has an email campaign to Congress and the press
for a peace tax fund, as two more of their members begin lengthy
prison terms for tax resistance.
