[Peace-discuss] Hillary Clinton, Democratic Party line up behind Israel

AWARE:
   
  Those horrified by Israel's actions in Middle East can find no comfort in the Democratic Party.  Today, by an astonishing plurality--410 to 8-- the Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress have held hands across the aisle in condemning Lebanon--a defenseless country--to continued Israeli invasion, followed possibly by a full-scale invasion.  
   
  Israel's criminal attack on Lebanon could not have gone forward without US blessing; it would end quickly minus US support.  Only one conclusion is possible: the invasion is part and parcel of the larger erruption of American imperialism in the Middle East and Central Asia.  And it portends a still wider war, possibly engaging Syria and Iran.  
   
  The lesson should be lost on noone:  There is no constituency for peace in the Democratic Party or among the remains of American liberalism.  It is necessary to make a clean political break. In one fell swoop Israel has done the service of exposing all pacifist pretensions in the Democratic Party as a pack of lies (no doubt an unintended casualty of war.)  Divisions within the party on Iraq have never been of kind but of degree; the question has never been whether or not the US should militarily dominate the Middle East, but how best tactically to achieve that end.  The unanimity between the two parties on the question of Israel's brutal attacks on Gaza and Lebanon shows once again that both parties believe that lethal and overwhelming force is the indispensible tool of US foreing policy in the region.
