[Peace-discuss] LATE BREAKING UPDATE: Counter Recruiting at IHSA Football Championships

It turns out the Army National Guard has changed location this year. They've
moved away from the southwest corner of Kirby and First. Instead, they've moved
deeper into that parking lot, behind the large central tent in tent city (which
is a line of tents in that parking lot along Kirby between 1st and Locust).

So we'll just move with them. I've contacted University Police and notified them
that we'll be there handing out literature. I was told by Lieutenant Acree that
we are welcome to do that. I assured the Lieutenant that we will not block
people or otherwise disrupt the Army National Guard folks. There is a wide open
space in front of the Army National Guard presence (they have a trailer, the
same customized Humvee as in the past, a couple tables and a couple exercise
stations). I will also have many signs as well - casualty portraits and a few
that say "You can't be all you can be - if you're dead" - it's a well-done
poster by the AFSC with a military cemetary (Arlington?) in the background.

Military Recruiting at Upcoming High School State
Football Finals at Memorial Stadium
November 24 & 25
JOIN US and help provide High School Students and their families information not
provided by the Military Recruiters.
*Each year the Illinois Army National Guard pitches a tent and parks an eagle
emblazoned high tech Humvee in the parking lot across from Memorial Stadium.
Their
goal is to lure young impressionable students and their families into this high
tech
recruiting camp with loud patriotic music, video games, and cute little prizes.
Several
smiling recruiters stand behind tables to welcome and talk to students while
giving them
free glossy materials and making a pitch about a career in the military.
In response to this blatantly inappropriate recruiting venue, AWARE is
organizing a
counter recruiting presence. Can YOU spare a few minutes to join us? Hold a
sign! Help
distribute some literature! Engage with the public!
>From 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm, we will be gathering on the sidewalk on both
Friday
and Saturday, Nov. 24 & 25 in front of the National Guard Tent on the southwest
corner
of Kirby Avenue just across from Memorial Stadium. We will have signs and
appropriate literature available to hold and distribute.
All we need is concerned and involved citizens to join us. Come as you are able,
even for
an hour or two! Let's show our community disapproves of this type of high school
recruitment event.
