In response to Mrs. Schweighart, we can't see the facts of what happened
March 30
because police still have not released police reports after 3 weeks.

I write in regards to reports regarding police allegedly going overboard
during a recent arrest of a subject whom they pepper sprayed.

Why don't readers ever see any articles or people going to the council
meetings regarding police officers who are spit on, fought with, injured or
subjected to vile language? Our officers are well trained, and they
encounter unruly people. However, news stories quote people who were not
present, which is hearsay.

There is no respect for authority, and local media and others routinely
condemn police.

Regarding the comments from a candidate for Champaign City Council who
recalled "seeing a young man bleeding from his head, frightened and
confused," that is what can happen when someone disregards lawful authority.
When a police officer tells someone to stop, he should stop, not keep
walking away and cussing and later resisting. Those who read Section 720
Illinois Compiled Statutes 5/31-1(a) will see that there is a law on the
books for resisting and obstructing a police officer, and the elements of
the offense.

If one reads the facts of the disputed arrest of this young man, they will
find that officers responded as they should have.

My husband has worked in the criminal justice system for over 36 years, and
I have done so for more than 20 years.

There are more important things for The News-Gazette to report than an
arrest that was done right by our police. The old saying is, "You're damned
if you do and damned if you don't."
