Did the city leave a couple of zeros off that cash offer? Can you imagine the response if this had occurred in the south end of town??? Any info on what Ms Davis intends to do about it?

  AWARE weekly meeting.
Sunday, August 5, 2007

News of the week. Presented by Carl

Financial Report. Jan: ($25 sent to ILCPJ for annual dues)

Farmer’s Market.
“Impeach” yard signs ($7) spurred conversation at the market, both
positive and negative.

Aside: Jan sent around Dennis Kucinich’s 12 point plan for Iraq.

Main Event.
A lightly attended, about 20 people, main event rally took place on
Sunday. 200 flyers were passed out. One very negative incident took
place (all verbal).
Next month the main event falls on Labor Day weekend. All urged to get
people out.

Durl suggested that Main Events focus on one aspect of the war (e.g.
torture, ‘civilian contractors’, death toll). Signs would be made to
fit the month’s theme.

Aside: The younger members are planning another ‘Die-in’ on August 15.
Details in separate post from Cody.

AWARE Presents.
Meeting will take place on next week AUGUST 15 Wednesday @ 7 pm at Durl
and Jan Kruse’ home.
Come with ideas.

Anti-Racism.
1. Monday @ 7 pm Sub-committee report will be presented on the local
justice system. Steve Becket will present. Topics will include: lack
of minority representation on juries and the continuous jury system.

2. The Citizen’s Police Review Board will be voted on at the Urbana
City council meeting on Monday.

3. Champaign has voted down a CPRB.

4. A letter from the city of Champaign was delivered to Ms Davis (sp)
by Rev. Charles Nash Sr., Head of the Champaign Ministerial Alliance,
offering a cash settlement for the actions of police while chasing a
suspect earlier in the year. Police entered Ms. Davis’ residence in
pursuit of a suspect, firing several rounds in the house in the
presence of Ms. Davis and her day-care children.
The monetary compensation offered if Ms. Davis signed a waiver to the
affect that the Champaign Police were not at fault was $200.

Counter Recruitment.
1. Barbra suggested that AWARE pursue avenues to assist anti-war groups
working within the U.S. military. This question will be addressed at
future meetings.

2. The U.S. military has adopted a ‘kinder/gentler’ mentor-like
approach to drill sergeants and boot camp. In addition to financial
incentives this measure is designed to hold on to recruits.

Anti-torture Ribbons.
Barbra outlined efforts by other peace groups to wear orange or white
ribbons to highlight the US involvement in torture.
Topic will be revisited. Suggested that torture would make a good
theme for the Main Event.
Suggested that their may be international symbols for torture
opposition.

Old Business.
1. March for Peace.
Two students are walking from San Francisco to DC to protest the War.
They will be in CU this week and march through town. Not clear what
day but suggested that we should walk with them. They have asked for
people to walk from CU to Danville with them. Details to be posted
separate message.

2. Blackwater on Campus and in Illinois.
>From Wikipedia (the left leaning internet info center!): Blackwater USA
is a private military company and security firm. Founded in 1997 by
Erik Prince and Al Clark, it is based in North Carolina. The company
markets itself as being "The most comprehensive professional military,
law enforcement, security, peacekeeping, and stability operations
company in the world".

Blackwater is training at the U of I and near Mt. Carroll in North
Western Illinois
(http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-
blackwater_23jul23,0,1702001.story)

Blackwater is also on the U of I campus working with the University of
Illinois Police Training Institute. A letter in the News Gazette by
Rodger drew attention to Blackwater’s presence here on campus
(http://www.news-gazette.com/news/opinions/letters/2007/08/05/

New Business
1. Hiroshima Day Vigil
Will be held on Monday August 6th at 7:30 at West Side Park.

2. “Massive March” is on hold until organizers (Mort) return.

3. A protest at the Blackwater Western Illinois campus.
August 11. The protest is organized by a group called ‘Clearwater’.
Dave Enstrom is planning on attending. Details will be forth coming.
