Yes, there is a pattern here.

Robert Satloff was on last week, trying to convince Arabs that if only they could appreciate that some Arabs in North Africa protected Jews during the Holocaust, then some might learn to accept Israel now. But he also wants them feel guilty for collaboration with the Nazis, and distorts the emigration of Jews from Arab countries. He avoids addressing the central issue: Arabs don't like it when they see Israelis occupying and killing Palestinians, invading Lebanon, supporting American in Iraq, threatening to bomb Iran, etc. No, Satloff implies, I can write a book, pander to you by acknowledging that a few of you haven't always hated Jews, you'll stop denying the Holocaust, and then we'll all get along--except for the fact that Israel will keep killing Arabs whenever it feels like it, and just have to live with that.

And Jeffrey Goldberg, like Yossi Klein Halevi of recent vintage, wants us to admire his bending over backwards to have a personal relationship with an Arab or two, as if personal relationships are the problem, not land, oil, power, and violence. Israelis always will tell you they have an Arab friend, just like southern whites used to always tell you they had a black friend. Meanwhile, Goldberg slanders Jimmy Carter for getting it about half right. So you've got one American "reaching out" to Arabs, another American moving to Israel to fight Arabs and "reaching out to Arabs", who have such a hard time either accepting or ignoring that Jews, with the support of Americans, have come to the Middle East to kick their butts, take their land, and control their oil.

And then we have Oren, an American-Iraeli-American-Israeli (who knows?), operating from the same think tank as the execrable Halevi, and in the same vein. The problem is Christian Zionism, American "idealism" in the Middle East, and Arab perfidy. But not oil, Zionism as it has allied itself with American ambitions, and Israel as an apartheid and pariah state.

So here's the recipe: Get the Christians involved, take some heat off the Jews. Play the Holocaust card--Jewish efforts to "reach out", especially when unsuccessful, just reinforce a sense of innate goodness and eternal victimization. Equate denial of the Holocaust to the Holocaust itself. Let's not talk about Israel at all--let's talk about America, so as to heighten the contrast between "western" and "Islamic" civilization. But let's never, ever consider how people react to being invaded, dispossessed, bombed, starved, and murdered on a regular and systematic basis.

After all, what kind of people do that sort of thing?

  DG
