Police need to be held accountable Monday July 16, 2007

I had to respond to Gary Stirewalt's July 10 letter. His attitude was that
police can do no wrong. This is precisely why police should not be allowed
on a civilian review board. As for Urbana's "highly qualified" chief, if
doing nothing to protect the citizens from an officer (Kurt Hjort) who was a
sexual predator means he is highly qualified, then I agree.

This review board is not about liberals, conservatives or rude officers, it
is about the law and if the police choose to break the law they should be
held accountable. If they follow the law as they swear to do the review
board cannot touch them.

I am also sick and tired of hearing police officers whine about how they
should get a break because their job is difficult and dangerous, as if they
are the only ones with a difficult and dangerous job. The fact is a police
officer is not one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs. A pizza deliverer is.
I don't recall the Domino's guy whining that he should be allowed to break
the law because his job is hard and we should feel sorry for him and not
second-guess him.

The police have no one to blame but themselves. They repeatedly terrorize
innocent people. Now it looks like they might be held accountable � welcome
to the real world.
