National Conference Call:
Defeating the Supplemental War Appropriation

Tuesday, March 6
8:30 - 9:30 p.m. eastern time
319-632-1100
access code: 381726#

This call will include an update on the jockying within congress on
the supplemental, and the role the peace movement has played and will
continue to play. There will be plenty of time to exchange ideas and
suggest tactics and strategies.

Supplemental Facts:
- Bush has requested nearly $100 billion to pay for the war.
- Congress has the power to approve or deny the request, and to put
conditions on the funding.
- UFPJ has consistently lobbied Congress to DENY the request -- asking
members to vote NO on the supplemental.
- It's an uphill battle given the lack of moral courage in Congress,
so UFPJ couples this 'vote NO' strategy with a push for strong
conditions on the funding -- possible conditions this year include a
prohibition on a U.S. attack on Iran, and possibly, an amendment
requiring that all troops be withdrawn from Iraq within 6 months.
- Right now, the House Appropriations subcommitee on Defense, chaired
by Rep. Murtha, is drafting the appropriations request into a bill.
Rep. Murtha has considerable power to decide what conditions will be
placed on the funding. He has been in the news for his plan to
require that troops deployed to Iraq meet certain readiness standards.
He is reported to be considering adding language ro prohibit an
invasion of Iraq, but this is not confirmed or certain. Murtha says
the bill will be voted on by the full Appropriations committee by
March 7.
- When it leaves the Appropriations Committee, the bill will be
considered by the full House. Amendments may be offered to the bill.
A vote by the full House is expected by March 14.
- The bill will then be considered by the Senate -- we don't have a
timeline for Senate action yet.

How does the conference call work?
To join the conference call, simply call 319-632-1100 a few minutes
before 8:30 eastern time. You will be prompted to enter the access
code, and then you will join the call. This is a normal long distance
call -- there is no additional charge for the conferencing service.

There is no need to RSVP. You are welcome to invite others working
to end the war and occupation of Iraq to join this call.
