[Peace-discuss] Response to Mark

Those are a bunch of good points, Ricky. I wish I could write something, but I am rather preoccupied lately.

We could point out that we are only against the government when the government is wrong. For instance, we don't mind having terrorists wiretapped, but we believe that wiretapping requires supervision. We worry about having the FBI wiretap Democratic politicians (remember Watergate), or journalists, or their former girlfriends, or Paris Hilton. Sure enough, five years after the PATRIOT Act, we find out that the FBI has been issuing tens of thousands of national security letters per year, not mere "hundreds" as advertised, and that they issued some that were admitted to be improper..

We generally avoid ad hominem attacks against Bush; again, we're only against Bush when he's wrong. (If he's ever right, I'll cheer for him that one time.)

(Ad hominem? I hope that the op-ed piece is written at a fifth-grade level. Some of the polished prose I see is a wonder to behold, but on an editorial page we don't want to sound like Eastern intellectuals.)

We think the N-G editorial attitude is unduly slanted toward Mark, who buys lots of advertising from the N-G's parent corporation. That is one reason why it is important for a community to have an alternative news source -- an "independent media center."

I'm being pretty free with the word "we" but you understand that's rhetorical.

While I'm here:
  (a) It's good to see Linda in here. Also Ron.
  (b) "Amazing Grace" is still in the theaters but probably not for much longer. Carry a handkerchief and sit in the back row so that people won't see you cry. Reminds me of "Amistad" but it contains more history, and (yay!) the leftist agitator (Wilberforce) gets the girl.
