James Loewen visits Allen Hall/Unit One 9/9-9/12
(UIUC campus, near where Gregory would meet Lincoln if it were cut through)
Loewen gave an excellent talk Sunday evening on Sundown Towns --
towns that forbid Blacks (or Jews, or Chinese, or ...) after dark. See
      http://www.ucimc.org/node/1806
Events yet to come, also in Allen Hall Lounge:

Mon 9/10 7pm "Lies My Teacher Told Me"
Perhaps the best-selling book by a living sociologist,
"Lies" puts back what high school American history textbooks leave out.
(Loewen's books will also be for sale on Monday evening)

Tue 9/11 7pm "Writing History in Stone" --
Historical markers, monuments, and museums that are afraid
to tell the truth about the past.

Wed 9/12 7pm "How Standardized Tests Like the SAT, ACT, and GRE
			Lie About Your Abilities"

Tue 9/11 noon Arabic Calligraphy
Asian American Cultural Center, 1210 W. Nevada St.
If you missed last weekend's open house at CIMIC,
the man (Nasir?) who gave a beautiful demonstration
of Arabic calligraphy and spoke about its traditions
will present again at the Tuesday noon "Food for Thought" series
at the UIUC Asian American Cultural Center, 1210 W. Nevada.

Wed 9/12 5pm How to put together an anti-torture workshop
Mennonite Church, NW corner of Lincoln & Springfield, U.
The Mennonite Peace & Justice committee (and anyone else
who wishes to attend) will hear from Barbara Kessel --
she has been collecting anti-torture materials and will
speak on training people to run a workshop.

Wed 9/12 7pm "Welcoming Everyone to the Table: Migrant Workers,
Immigration, and the New Sanctuary Movement in Urbana-Champaign"
	Channing-Murray Foundation, Mathews & Oregon, U.
6pm pot luck in Channing-Murray basement -- bring a dish to share if you can
   7pm panel discussion, including

    * Matt Kuenning, attorney, and professor in UofI College of Law
    * Martina Miranda-Lugo and Martha Betenia, Migrant Summer School recruiters
    * Rev. Mike Mulberry, Minister, Community United Church of Christ
    * Aide Acosta, UIUC graduate student in anthropology

Come learn about and discuss issues surrounding immigration,
immigration law, migrant work and workers in the area,
and what the New Sanctuary Movement is all about.

We'll also be collecting food & clothing items for
local migrant workers. Items needed include
(in good condition and CLEAN): light coats (any size),
children's clothing, linens & blankets, dry & canned foods
(rice, beans, canned veg., peanut butter, bread, tortillas, coffee ...)
