The sage plant, if authentic, is the same one that is called Wormwood.
It contains a euphoria-inducing psychotropic substance that is not well
characterized.  It is the same plant used to prepare the sometime popular
drink "absinthe".  Burning of this plant in an enclosed space will 
definitely
release enough of the euphoriant into the air to produce an altered state
in those sagacious ones performing the cleansing ritual.
