Thanks for the links, Neil. Drives home just how complex the subject is, and how inventive solutions need to be... and also that some options that I don't like might be necessary under the circumstances (military and charter schools -- both are part of the Chgo PUBLIC school system, btw).

Hmmmm, well, yes.... I always love hearing these armchair experts talk about Teaching Independent Thinking and Creativity... when what all tchrs are really busting their humps to do is teach basic literacy and math skills (esp in inner city schools, and in disadvantaged areas in college towns and medium cities and small rural towns as well. You have NO idea of the severity of the problem if you haven't been in the trenches yrselves and seen it first hand. Kudos to Duncan for saying he's put literacy into the schools 4 hrs a day (I can only hope that's really true). Jury's not in on him for that and other things yet, in my opinion. Hope y'all will continue to keep posting info on this to peace-discuss.

The Economist has called Duncan a "liberal right winger" as well.

I hope that is enough.

With the people, for the people, by the people. I crack up when I hear it; I say, with the handful, for the handful, by the handful because that's what really happens.
[fannie lou hamer, 1917-1977]

Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience...Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running and robbing the country. That's our problem.
