In its dying days, the Bush administration is taking all sorts of steps to allow big business to increase its plunder of the environment. This has taken the form of administrative rulings on endangered species, air quality, etc. One measure was to hold a short notice auction on drilling rights on federal property - especially national parks. One such auction was held this weekend. While some environmentalists picketed outside, one young guy who came planning to join the picket, evidently, decided that he had to step it up. He went inside, registered as a bidder, and bid up the price of some of the parcels by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then he realized that he could actually win the bids, and so he did - winning rights to some hundreds of thousands of acres. Dressed in an old, beat-up parka, his "competitors" got suspicious and had him removed and arrested.

One interesting thing is that he commented that "we" (environmentalists) have been protesting and writing letters for years and it isn't working, so it's necessary to step up the action. If comrades want to read the story, here is the place:   http://www.sltrib.com/ci_11274601?source=email
