Rove's IT Guru Warned of Sabotage
http://www.truthout.org/122408J
Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!: "A top Republican internet strategist who was
set to testify in a case alleging election tampering in 2004 in Ohio has
died in a plane crash. Mike Connell was the chief IT consultant to Karl Rove
and created websites for the Bush and McCain electoral campaigns. He also
set up the official Ohio state election website reporting the 2004
presidential election returns. Connell was reportedly an experienced pilot.
He died instantly Friday night when his private plane crashed in a
residential neighborhood near Akron, Ohio."

Court Reinstates Clean Air Rule During EPA Fix
http://www.truthout.org/122408K
Jesse J. Holland, The Associated Press: "In a ruling hailed by
environmentalists, a federal appeals court on Tuesday reinstated one of
President George W. Bush's clean air regulations while the Environmental
Protection Agency makes court-mandated changes. In July, the US Appeals
Court for the District of Columbia Circuit threw out the Clean Air
Interstate Rule, which required 28 mostly Eastern states to reduce
smog-forming and soot-producing emissions that can travel long distances in
the wind."

Biden Says Deal Near on Stimulus Plan
http://www.truthout.org/122408L
Richard Cowan, Reuters: "The incoming Obama administration is nearing
agreement with congressional Democrats on a huge emergency spending bill
intended to jolt the weak U.S. economy and create 3 million jobs over two
years, Vice President-elect Joe Biden said on Tuesday. Asked whether an
agreement on the shape of the stimulus bill would be reached by Christmas,
Biden said: 'I think we're getting awful close to that.'"

Zimbabwe Faces Bleak Christmas Amid Food Crisis
http://www.truthout.org/122408M
Angus Shaw, The Associated Press: "At overflowing garbage dumps in
Zimbabwe's capital, desperate vagrants pounced on trash bags and fought over
chicken bones and scraps of discarded food. Sewage clogged streets and most
shopkeepers didn't even bother with holiday decorations. In crumbling,
largely Christian Zimbabwe, where a cholera epidemic has killed more than
1,100 people, Christmas is just another day of suffering."

Massive TVA Coal Sludge Spill Devastates Tennessee
http://www.truthout.org/122408N
Anne Paine and Colby Sledge, The Tennessean: "Millions of yards of ashy
sludge broke through a dike at TVA's Kingston coal-fired plant Monday,
covering hundreds of acres, knocking one home off its foundation and putting
environmentalists on edge about toxic chemicals that may be seeping into the
ground and flowing downriver. One neighboring family said the disaster was
no surprise because they have watched the 1960s-era ash pond's mini-blowouts
off and on for years."

Madoff Fund Operator de la Villehuchet Found Dead
http://www.truthout.org/122408O
Saijel Kishan, Katherine Burton and Henry Goldman, Bloomberg: "A New
York-based money manager who may have lost $1.4 billion of client funds
invested with Bernard Madoff apparently killed himself in his Madison Avenue
office, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. 'Our investigative premise
is that it was a suicide,' Kelly said today in an interview. The body of
Thierry Magon de La Villehuchet, 65, a co-founder and chief executive
officer of Access International Advisors, was found today. The company
raised money mainly from wealthy European investors. Madoff was arrested on
Dec. 11 for allegedly running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme."
