When Julia Reitz was giving her background info (during the panel discussion Wed Jan 30) I tho't it was significant (and a bit startling to me when she actually said it) that she had always been interested in the prosecution side of the law (I'm betting the sympathies of most of us on this list tend to lie w/ defendants, especially the disadvantaged). It also explains why she would have a lot in common with- and marry someone in law enforcement.

I agree that Reitz's performance during her tenure as State's Attny -- based on whatever the actual job description is -- is what determines whether she gets our vote this time. Yes, she definitely has a short fuse... and fwiw, she interrupted/took offense when Miller, the Rep candidate (not Ivy) said some of those in the office seemed to think the defendents were "scum." Re plea bargains, Reitz said she'd ALWAYS rather give a defendent chance for a plea bargain and parole (so maybe there's something we secular folks don't know re this).

Also, fwiw, I tho't Ivy acquitted himself well until he seemed to trivialize the actions of U of I star athletes, laughing and saying "their parents should have taken a belt to them" and that they should appreciate the opportunity they'd been given, etc... It also troubled me that Miller has a different standard for someone shoplifting for fun (less serious offense) and someone shoplifting for need (more serious offense). I would think the charge at the time of the arrest would and should be identical, tho' (at the plea bargain, etc stage) first vs repeat offenses and the other components mentioned would be factors.

Jmho (based on general observation and limited knowledge),

one of the standard questions is whether one has a relative in law

recognizes that this is a potential source of bias, and might color
someone's judgment.
