[Peace-discuss] Disappointed with the Urbana Government? Run as a Green in 2009!

I know many of us in the progressive community have been disappointed and
disturbed with the Democratic Party leadership's action to block the
non-binding Instant Runoff Voting referenda from appearing on the ballot.
Their actions show that their primary desire is to maintain power, even
through fear mongering and distortion. Six of the seven council members are
Democrats, along with the Mayor and City Clerk. Let's get some more party
diversity in Urbana government! The 2009 election is closer than it seems.
Primary petitions are due December 15th, with the primary election on
February 24th and the general election on April 7th. Although IRV would
vastly increase the motivation and likelihood of a third party, independent,
or non-establishment major party candidate getting elected, it can still
happen in our current system if we actually contest the elections. I urge
you to start considering a run for city council, mayor, or county clerk.
The Green Party is now an established party and will have lower signature
requirements and a primary election. If you are interested in running for
office as a Green, please let me know and I'd be glad to answer any
questions you may have. I do believe we need more participation and would
be glad to answer questions and direct non-Green candidates towards
resources as well.

Remember, that the Democratic leadership is also represented on the
Champaign County Board. This year, we have four excellent Green county
board candidates who have a great chance at getting elected, with your help:

Walter Pituc: District 7
Kostas Yfantis: District 7
Joe Futrelle: District 8
Mike Lehman: District 9

The anti-war Green presidential candidate will also appear on the ballot in
Illinois, most likely former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. The nomination
will occur from July 10-13 in Chicago. If you're interested in attending
the nomination event, or the entire convention, you can find more
information here: http://www.greenparty2008.org/

For peace, justice, democracy, and victory,

Tom Abram
