Political Block
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning this weekend, Book TV will feature a
political bloc of book programming every Sunday
afternoon from 1 PM - 6 PM ET. This bloc willl feature
books about the candidates, political issues and
trends.
Bruce Schulman and Julian Zelizer,
Rightward Bound: Making America Conservative in
the 1970s
History professors Bruce Schulman and Julian
Zelizer present a collection of essays that recount
how the American conservative movement rose in the
1970's. According to the editors the decade has often
been cast as a footnote between the politically active
1960's and 1980's but Mr. Schulman and Mr. Zelizer
contend that fissures in the liberal movement,
migration of a segment of the population to the
Sunbelt, and the activity of conservative grass roots
organizations laid the groundwork for conservative
ascendancy.
(Sunday 1 PM ET)
-------------------------------------
Gil Troy, Leading from the Center: Why
Moderates Make the Best Presidents
Gil Troy writes that the best American presidents have
all been moderates, citing the examples of George
Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy,
and Ronald Reagan. He says most presidential
candidates pretend to be moderates, but show
themselves as partisans once they are in office. Mr.
Troy urges politicans of all stripes to be "muscular,"
unapologetic moderates.
