One of the reasons that I thought it would be useful to ask Francis to
give a talk was the following memory: sometime around 1988 I initiated
a talk by Francis on campus about the Palestinian Declaration of
Independence, in which he played a role. The next day there was a huge
spread in the News-Gazette under the headline: "UI Prof Plays Role in
PLO Statement." When I saw the headline, I laughed and thought,
"Local
Boy Makes Good." I was pleased that the News-Gazette's local
boosterism trumped its politics, and ever since then I have had more
positive feelings towards the News-Gazette.
