Weekend Highlights
Brendan Koerner, Now the Hell Will Start: One Soldier's Flight From the
Greatest
 Manhunt of World War II
Brendan Koerner recounts the life of Herman Perry, an African-American GI that
was
sent to South Asia in 1943 as one of many African-American soldiers assigned to

build the Ledo Road. Mr. Koerner relays that following poor treatment by white

officers and the physical toll of working in the jungle, Mr. Perry fled his
battalion.
Herman Perry was tracked for several months and Mr. Koerner follows his path
into
the Indo-Burmese jungle where Mr. Perry befriended a local tribe and
subsequently
married the chief's daughter. This event was hosted by Hue-Man Bookstore
in New
 York City.
(Saturday 9:15 PM ET)
Jeff Shaara, The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II

Historical novelist Jeff Shaara presents a fictionalized account of D-Day. Mr.

Shaara profiles the American and German militaries and depicts the higher
ranking
officers and the G.I.'s who participated in the battle. This event was
hosted by
The Bookworm Bookstore in Omaha, Nebraska.
(Saturday 11 PM ET)
Alvin Felzenberg, The Leaders We Deserved (And a Few We Didn't): Rethinking
the
Presidential Rating Game
Alvin Felzenberg contends that the way U.S. presidents are historically ranked
always
concludes with the same six men at the top. Mr. Felzenberg argues that a
certain
type of president, one who champions expanded executive privilege unless it is
used
harmfully, is rewarded. Using a new historical yardstick to determine
presidential
performance, Mr. Felzenberg posits that James K. Polk was the greatest war
president
and that Woodrow Wilson had the strongest economic record among several other
findings
from his research. Alvin Felzenberg discussed his book on the C-SPAN program,
Washington
Journal.
(Sunday 1 AM and 3:15 PM, Monday 5:45 AM ET)
