In a comment to a Jane Mayer article republished by commondreams.org,
   http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/07/26/10634/
"The Battle for a Country's Soul", someone named Zuma offers a memorable
phrase, writing:

=========================
    the war on terror is a misnomer.
    it is the war on resistance.

    if one makes this translation constantly in one’s mind as one reads
    all the countless articles and books on the subject of these times,
    no matter how enlightened one already be or agree, a peculiar small
    further light dawns somehow. or so it seems to me.

    the war on resistance.
=========================

This sounds right to me.

The Mayer article is strongly written but disappointing in parts:
she mentions that "both parties’ presidential nominees have taken strong,
principled stands against torture, [...]". She even mentions McCain's vote
*against* putting the same anti-torture restrictions on the CIA as
already apply to the Military, but calls it simply "a feint to the right".
What kind of principled stand is that?

   Stuart
