Curious news stories today.
Reuters reports:
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley has resigned, and Air Force
Secretary Michael Wynne may also be on the brink of resigning, the defense
publication InsideDefense.com reported on Thursday.
"Top-level Pentagon officials gave Moseley the option to resign or be fired
during a meeting this morning," the website reported, quoting an unidentified
military official. "Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne also could resign later
today," it said.
ABC News has more info:
Defense Secretary Robert Gates asked for the resignations after a
blistering, and still classified, report on the screwup that resulted in nuclear
fuses being sent to Taiwan. Said one official, "It's a very serious report that
makes very serious allegations."
This will be the second service secretary to be fired by Robert Gates. Last
year, he fired Army Secretary Francis Harvey.
========
The ABC quote about "very serious allegations" could be read to mean that it
wasn't a "screwup" at all, but -- like some other recent incidents (e.g., the
live nukes flown across the country?) -- a neocon attempt (perhaps originating
in the OVP) to get their war on by bypassing the chain of command.
Remember that the WP printed last year an account of how Cheney had done
something similar to get the illegal policy on terrorist prisoners in place.
"What the hell just happened?" the feckless Colin Powell was quoted as asking.
Perhaps we should be asking that again. Cheney (who dropped out of Yale twice in
years when it was impossible to flunk out of the Ivy League, except for
"emotional difficulties") is nuts. --CGE
