A New President and a New Congress
“I look forward to working with our next president to bring about the changes our country so desperately needs,” Senator Bernie Sanders said. “But we should not be naive about the fierce opposition we will face from the big-money interests who want to maintain the status quo – whether it’s the economy, health care, energy, the military industrial complex, etc.  We can win, however, if people stand together and stay engaged in the political process.”

Bonus Ban
Sanders is leading the fight to ban bonuses for executives of banks bailed out by taxpayers. He made the case in a letter to Treasury Secretary Paulson. Bonuses totaling more than $70 billion already have been budgeted, according to Forbes. “The same people who created the financial crisis are in line to collectively reap billions of dollars while the middle class is left to pick up the tab,” the senator told the treasury secretary.

Pay Cap
Companies that took part in a $700 billion taxpayer bailout could pay top executives no more than the president of the United States under a bill Sanders will introduce. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sanders voiced frustration that the original plan to buy assets of troubled financial institutions morphed into direct capital injections for healthy banks to acquire weaker rivals.

Sound Off
"There should be no bonuses, and no dividends, until the money is repaid," a constituent from Dorset , Vermont , wrote to Bernie. "That these companies can take billions from Uncle Sam and then misappropriate it to the detriment of the United States is unbelievable," added a reader from Olympia , Washington . Grilling Greenspan
The former Fed chairman belatedly acknowledged his refusal to regulate markets resulted in the casino capitalism that caused a worldwide economic collapse. The CBC flagship news program, The National, reported that “Bernie Sanders was one of the very few who challenged the oracle.” They clashed over market deregulation, unfettered free trade, abolishing the minimum wage, and tax breaks for millionaires. Rebuild America
Congress must pass a massive “Rebuild America” program to stimulate the economy. “We must make a major investment putting millions of Americans to work repairing our crumbling roads, bridges, transportation systems and electric grid, ending our dependence on fossil fuel, and addressing social crises we face in terms of education, health care and poverty,” Sanders wrote in column published by The Huffington Post.

Digital TV
On February 17, 2009, the country will switch from analog to digital TV signals. If you get your TV over the air with an antenna or rabbit ears, you need to act now to make sure you will still get TV reception in your home. Many of the 30,000-plus Vermonters who rely on over-the-air free television service could lose their signal altogether if they do not act beforehand.
