This unfortunately doesn't suprise me !

The first time I remember the Urban League was when I was 14 years old ( circa 1972 ).

Vernon Barkstall was the Champaign county director at the time. A veteran of the southern civil rights movement, a community organizer, and a unique human being, who NEVER wanted fame and fortune, only justice for the PEOPLE.
Vernon NEVER sucked-up to the " powers that be ". Vernon had the " powers that be " sucking-up to him ( ie. Bankers and Realators and Champaign county officials saying ; " Please Vernon, don't picket us, don't boycott us, what can we do to help you, what can we do to help the people " ). Unlike the corporate ass kisser Tracy Parsons in later years after Vernon died.

This is the lesson that needs to be learned..... Advocates for the PEOPLE are the one's who last and will be the most respected. Corporate ass-kissers will be used and abused and when the powers that be are done with them, they will throw them to the curb !

This, in my opinion, is why the Urban League has failed in Champaign County.

David J.

So what happened? Loss of funding? Corruption? Mismanagement? What's the underlying reason why the Urban League has closed?

Sadly indeed….. this most of happened when everyone was looking the other way.

I guess we were all too busy with our thang and the Presidential election.

Thanks Jean...my heart bleeds with yours...as staff and the Black community as a whole, we are in a condition of great distress...yet I think you would agree it's better we find a way to build something new than have the name of the League being used in fundamental opposition to the mission and spirit.

    Love with a heavy heart,
