>US Threatens to Halt Services to Iraq Without Troop Accord
http://www.truthout.org/102708K Roy Gutman and Leila Fadel, >McClatchy
Newspapers: "The US military has warned Iraq that it will shut down military
operations and other vital >services throughout the country on Jan. 1 if the
Iraqi government doesn't agree to a new agreement on the status of US
?>forces or a renewed United Nations mandate for the American mission in
Iraq. Many Iraqi politicians view the move as >akin to political blackmail,
a top Iraqi official told McClatchy Sunday."

I find this ironic that the US government will end the war and stop military
action if Iraq does not sign a New agreement; but will not end the war and
withdraw the troops before total control is established by us (since it it
not in the US's national interests allegedly) otherwise. If they are
threatening to end the war without the agreement in place, why would they
not end it even if an agreement existed. More interesting, why do they not
use that as the reason for ending the war now and cutting their losses
rather than seeking an extension of the agreement since their threat
demonstrates that the war and troops on the ground are not all that
essential as they claim for national security or national interests?
