YES!! Come for this wonderful animated feature and then stay for visiting, snacks, and after-film discussion.

Hey all,

Please join AWARE Films, this Sunday at 2pm,
Champaign Public Library Robeson room "C", for

    Sita Sings the Blues

Not a political issue film this time, this is an animated telling --
by Urbana native Nina Paley -- of the classical Hindu story of
Sita and Rama, interwoven with 1920s Annette Hanshaw blues music,
commentary from modern-day Indians who remember various versions
of the story, and the filmmaker's own life.  (Be careful how you
break up with an artist.)   This was one of the films chosen for
the 2009 Ebertfest.  More at

A political twist: part of the reason we're able to show this film
is that Paley has released it under the Creative Commons license
("all wrongs reversed") -- as at questioncopyright.org.

Anyone is free to download, show, and re-use the film; she encourages
viewers to support her, and sells some material things, but the
relationship is completely different from the usual one involving detailed
restrictions and negotiations of property rights.  She gave a conference
talk about how this is working out: the answer is, surprisingly well;
we may show that talk too.

... also...

AWARE's last Urbana Indoor Market of the year will be this Saturday,
Dec. 19th.  People have signed up for the middle (9:30-11) and last (11am-closing)
shifts -- thanks to Carl, Peggy, and the Webers -- but could really
use someone *with a car* to help with the 7:45am opening shift,
and maybe another person for the 9:30 shift too.   If you have time for either,
please let me know.
