We face a critical deadline on New Year's Eve, just three days from today..  

This will be the last time we file an end-of-year fundraising report before Vermont voters see my name on the ballot next November. It's a critical opportunity to demonstrate our campaign's strength heading into 2010.

Our grassroots supporters have always helped us post strong fundraising numbers before similar deadlines in the past.

Will you come through for me once more as we close the books on 2009?

I now have a declared primary opponent and a declared general election opponent. And if national Republican groups detect any signs of let-up in our end-of-year fundraising numbers, they may pump thousands of out-of-state dollars into Vermont to take me on. 

Republican operatives know I'm the only Democrat to have ever served Vermont in the U.S. Senate. As an outspoken advocate against misguided Republican policies and as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, they'd love to see me retire early.

So we can't show any sign of vulnerability in our end-of-year fundraising numbers. Will you help?

We've accomplished so much together over the past year, and indeed over the past six. 

But as the current U.S. health care debate and the recent Copenhagen climate summit show, change doesn't come easy -- and there's still so much work yet to be done. 

No matter what form the final health care bill takes, I will always fight to improve it, until health coverage in this nation is truly universal. 

No matter what comes next on global climate change accords, I will fight for the policies here at home to ensure we do not leave future generations with a planet in peril.

And no matter how much you can spare to contribute ahead of my campaign's December 31 fundraising deadline, know that I will always fight for the Vermont values we share so long as I'm in the Senate.
