*BLACK HISTORY MONTH*

Why not take advantage of our sale prices to learn more about the histories, struggles, and
accomplishments of Black people in the United States? The following are just a few valuable contributions to the documentation of Black people's histories:

WHAT WE WANT, WHAT WE BELIEVE: THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY LIBRARY (4xDVD)
"The invaluable Movement documentaries Newsreel produced furthered the work of the Black Panther Party and now provide the essential visual record of the Party's early days. This new DVD collection offers an extraordinary compilation that includes historic behind-the-scenes details taken from a wide range of interviews and contemporary events as well as the classic Newsreel films." —Kathleen Cleaver

ROBERT F. WILLIAMS: SELF RESPECT, SELF DEFENSE, & SELF-DETERMINATION (CD)
Robert Williams organized African-American armed self-defense in the South. President of the NAACP in Monroe, NC, he led the Black community in preventing Klan attacks and opposing the racism of governmental agencies. He was falsely accused of kidnapping charges by the FBI and was forced into exile in Cuba, where he broadcast Radio Free Dixie to bring the message of Black Liberation to the Southern US. Narrated by his widow, Mabel Williams, this audio documentary chronicles Williams' life through his interviews and speeches.

THE ANGOLA 3: BLACK PANTHERS AND THE LAST SLAVE PLANTATION (DVD)
This feature-length movie tells the gripping story of Robert King, Herman Wallace, and Albert Woodfox and their extraor
dinary struggle for justice. Politicized through contact with the Black Panther Party while inside Louisiana's prisons, the Angola 3 formed one of the only prison Panther chapters in history and worked to organize other prisoners into a movement for the right to live like human beings.

WE WILL RETURN IN THE WHIRLWIND: BLACK RADICAL ORGANIZATIONS 1960-1975 by Muhammad Ahmad
This pioneering study chronicles the most important Black radical organizations of the 60s, including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party (BPP), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers (LRBW).

DYNAMITE: A CENTURY OF CLASS VIOLENCE IN AMERICA by Louis Adamic with a foreword by Jon Bekken
Just reviewed in the LA Times!
http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-ca-louis-adamic8-2009feb08,0,2011078.story
The history of labor in the United States is a story of almost continuous violence. In DYNAMITE, Louis Adamic recounts a century of that history in vivid, carefully researched detail. Covering both well- and lesser-known events—from the riots of immigrant workers in the second quarter of the nineteenth century to the formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO)—he gives precise, and often brutal, meaning to the term "class war."

SHUTDOW
N: THE RISE AND FALL OF DIRECT ACTION TO STOP THE WAR (DVD)
On March 20, 2003—the day after the war started—San Francisco was brought to a grinding halt by thousands of activists who occupied the streets to oppose the war. The planning and outreach coordinated by Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW), filled downtown San Francisco with approximately 15,000 people clogging traffic, stopping business as usual, communicating with passersby, and creating a pandemonium that lasted for several days. But neither DASW nor the mass resistance outlasted Iraq's occupation. SHUTDOWN is an action-packed documentary chronicling how DASW successfully organized to shut down a major US city and how they failed to effectively maintain the organization to fight the war machine and end the occupation of Iraq. A must-see film for those engaged in the continuous struggle toward social justice.

SUBVERTING THE PRESENT, IMAGINI
NG THE FUTURE, ed. by Werner Bonefeld
Subversion is a truly human phenomenon. To subvert means to bring to the surface what is hidden beneath the forms of bourgeois respectability, a respectability in which every human capacity has its price. To subvert is to revolt against any system—economic, political, cultural or religious—where humanity is no more than an object to be manipulated, exploited, and dominated. Against the enclosures of our time, cycles of struggles build new commons of resistance, forming from the insurgencies against the existing order the basis for a new world . To subvert means to be realistic, to demand the impossible.

ANARCHY ALIVE! by Uri Gordon
Anarchist politics are at the heart of today's most vibrant and radical social movements. From squatted social centres and community gardens to acts of sabotage and raucous summit blockades, anarchist groups and networks are spreading an ethos of direct action, non-hierarchical organizing and self-liberation that has redefined revolutionary struggle for the 21st century. ANARCHY ALIVE! is a fascinating, in-depth look at the practice and theory of contemporary anarchism. This is the ideal book for anyone looking for a fresh, informed and critical engagement with anarchism, as a mature and dynamic political force in the age of globalization.
