[Discuss] [Peace-discuss] Editorial in News-Gazette offers up the single parent as scapegoat

But more to the point, as long as we have the current economic arrangement, a determined percentage of children will have to fail at some level or other of the system. Even if every child had two parents, a nanny, a tutor, a therapist, and a personal trainer, "success" is going to exist only in relation to "failure"--and some will be required to fail. Of course, success can be defined in other ways.

I suppose it could be argued that Alexander Haig and Tom Cruise, who were raised by single moms, could have turned out better.  Ed Bradley seems to have turned out okay, far as I know.

Bill Cosby is a little nutty on this topic and not to be trusted - sort of "My Fair Lady" but with baggy pants tossed in as a major determining factor for socioeconomic disparity.

Marti is right on, of course.

It's my understanding that the research on this suggests that the socioeconomic status of the parent(s) is the best predictor of success. So solving the problems with poverty and lack of equal opportunity for minorities and women will go a lot further in addressing this issue. As a side note Naperville Illinois happens to have its roots as a 'sundown' town.

Greater success with two-parent families
Tuesday February 24, 2009
The continuation of the consent decree in Champaign Unit 4 schools will never achieve what it is intended until minority children are raised in a two-parent environment. I think this is true for minority children whether they live in Champaign, Naperville, East St. Louis or Rockford.
Bill Cosby has tried to tell minorities that the two-parent family is the only way to raise successful children. But as long as children are raised by one parent, be they black, white, yellow or red, they will not be great achievers academically. I am sure everyone knows someone who makes this last statement false, but I wish someone in the educational field would look at the family unit that all the underachievers and discipline problem children in our schools come from.
I am sure a study such as this would open some eyes but then educators wouldn't be able to do anything about the results until families started raising children – two parents at a time.
