"Yesterday Obama got an official US intelligence briefing on the crisis in Gaza, which may or may not have numbed his brain with data he didn't need. Obama didn't need an intelligence briefing to tell him anything he really needs to know: that, once again, the twin poles of Israeli and Palestinian extremism have flared up in a way that will only undermine, perhaps fatally, the chances of a negotiated accord during Obama's first term in office."

This is a shocking quote from Robert Dreyfuss' wrongheaded Nation article. It's appalling to see referencce to "two poles of extremism," as if Israeli and American leaders are not extremists, and as if starving Gazans have any choice but to be led by "extremists" with homemade missles. Our own leaders must be held accountable, rather than this drivel about good Hamas, bad Hamas. The idea that Dreyfuss still views the U.S. as wanting to be an "honest broker" is amazing from an alleged leftist critic of U.S. foreign policy. But this is the problem that the Nation has always had in clinging to a "liberal" analysis of the situation.
