A Window for Israel/Palestine Peace?

Dear Jenifer,

If you want to be discouraged about the prospects for Israel/Palestine peace during the Obama Administration, you don't have any shortage of evidence you can cite; you never do. But if you want to look for openings, the situation already looks much better than it did just over a week ago.

Israel had to end its bombardment of Gaza by the January 20 "hope and change deadline," as Jon Stewart had predicted. President Obama appointed former Senator Mitchell as his envoy for Israel/Palestine diplomacy. It is widely perceived that Mitchell will be fair [1] - you might think this would be an obvious requirement, but in the recent history of U.S. policy, it would be an innovation. And as of this writing, Dennis Ross - faulted by fellow U.S. officials for having sabotaged Israeli-Palestinian peace in the Clinton Administration - hasn't been appointed to anything.

But it is not enough to have an impartial mediator. The parameters of U.S. policy have to change, or Mitchell will fail, even if he has the best intentions.

Just Foreign Policy and Jewish Voice for Peace are launching a campaign to urge President Obama to reform U.S. policy. In particular, we ask Americans to urge President Obama to end the blockade of Gaza, end the policy of trying to isolate Hamas, get serious about U.S. opposition to Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and insist that weapons that the U.S. supplies to Israel only be used in self-defense.

Can you take a few seconds to sign our letter to President Obama? We're going to deliver it to President Obama on February 23.
