            Dear David

            YOUR ACTION IS REQUESTED

The 2009 Supplemental Spending bill for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan -- which had been expected to sail on through -- has hit multiple snags, especially in the House. One result is that the 51 members of the House, who voted "No" the first time around because of their opposition to the wars, have become more influential. The White House may well need their votes in order to pass the bill and is exerting pressure for the "NO" voters to switch.

If your member of Congress has previously voted ,"NO" this is the right time to thank them and encourage them to continue their opposition. If the Congressional Representative is YES voter, call and ask them to reconsider.

To reach the Washington switchboard, use this toll-free number: (866) 261-4755 or call the Congressional switchboard directly at (202)-225-3121.

Among its many objectionable features, this 2009 Supplemental Spending bill places Congress in support of an escalated war in Afghanistan, which makes this battle especially significant.

If they are not convinced by the experience of every other foreign power that has invaded and occupied Afghanistan ("the graveyard of empires"), they should listen to the Rand Corporation and Carnegie Foundation studies (hardly bastions of antiwar activism), both of which conclude that there is no military solution to terrorism. It must be addressed with diplomacy, development and criminal prosecution.
Contrary to what some argue to justify the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, women are not being liberated. They and their children are the primary victims. According to MADRE, a leading women's rights organization working in Afghanistan, "Afghan community groups, women's organizations, and student movements have protested the occupation, but their voices are rarely heard in US media. More than 90 percent of Afghans polled by the BBC say they oppose the Taliban, but less than half see the US-led occupation as a positive alternative. Afghan women and families are already being killed in record numbers and more combat operations will mean more civilian deaths."

Here are some more talking points.

Thanks for taking the time to let Congress here from you.
