Subject: [cchcc-l] IL House Committee passes national single-payer
resolution!

Dear Friends,

Please join Champaign County Health Care Consumers (CCHCC) in thanking IL
State Representative Naomi Jakobsson for taking bold action to support
national single-payer health care reform. Rep. Jakobsson has already signed
on as a co-sponsor of IL HB 311, single-payer health care state legislation.
And now she has used her position to add her voice to the dozens of other
state leaders throughout the nation calling on Congress to pass a national
single-payer bill!

Please read below for more information and how to take action to thank Rep.
Jakobsson.

BACKGROUND:
Since the beginning of the national health reform debate, the public was
told that all options for national universal health coverage would be on the
table and considered equally. However, as the work on health care reform
legislation has begun, Congressional leaders working on health care reform
have made it clear that single-payer health care is not an option.

Even though national polls show that a clear majority of the public and
physicians support a single-payer health care system, Sen. Max Baucus
(D-MT), chair of the Senate Finance Committee, along with several other key
players in the health reform debate, have stated on multiple occasions that
single-payer is "off the table" and will not be considered.

ILLINOIS LEADERS TAKE ACTION FOR SINGLE PAYER:
Some members of the Illinois House of Representatives spoke out against this
blatant disregard for the people's choice in health care reform. On May 6,
2009, the Human Services Committee, chaired by our very own Rep. Naomi
Jakobsson, passed a resolution supporting national single-payer health
insurance!

IL House Resolution 233 calls on the U.S. Congress to enact HR 676, "The
U.S. National Health Insurance Act," sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI).
HR 676 would provide universal health coverage to every single U.S. resident
by establishing a national single-payer health care system.

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), sponsor of
HB 311, the "Health Care for All Illinois Act," and a leader in the fight
for single-payer health insurance here in IL. Rep. Jakobsson is currently a
co-sponsor of HB 311 and has been a strong advocate for single-payer health
care in IL.

In order to advance the possibility of national single-payer health care, we
need as many people as possible speaking out for it, and speaking out for
us. As part of this effort, state legislators around the country are
expressing their support for HR 676. We are proud that under the leadership
of Rep. Jakobsson and Rep. Flowers, the Human Services Committee passed this
resolution.

SHOW YOUR GRATITUDE TO REP. JAKOBSSON!
Please take a moment to call or email Rep. Jakobsson and thank her for
demonstrating her strong support for single-payer health care by passing
this resolution demanding a national single-payer health care system.

Thank you, and keep up the fight for single-payer here in IL and around the
country!
