Last night one of my announced opponents, multi-millionaire Terrence Wall, kicked off his campaign with a fundraiser where he said his goal was to raise $500,000 - this in addition to the millions of dollars of his own money that he is capable of putting into the race.  I have always been outspent by my opponents, but 2010 could very well set a new record of money spent against me. 

My campaign won’t be raising $500,000 an event - our average contribution is just $49 because I’m committed to building a strong, people-powered organization fueled by supporters like you.

I don’t get too worked up by campaign smears and distortions, but I have to admit I am surprised by the negative tone coming from the opposition so early on.  My two announced Republican opponents are hard at work ramping up their rhetoric and attacking my character.

Dave Westlake has called me a “coward” and posted on his website that Russ Feingold  “ … is NOT a stand up guy” and “likes nothing more than when our proud nation is humbled.”  Meanwhile, Mr. Wall has declared, “I do not think that Wall Street should be regulated,” and has dismissed my call for health care reform and a public option, saying “our health care system is not broken.” 

Both Mr. Westlake and Mr. Wall are hard-right ideologues, lacking independence and standing in direct opposition to my progressive principles. And while I can easily shrug off personal attacks I believe these constant distortions will require a strong and early response.  Your early support will help our campaign respond and highlight my work in the Senate.
