I just finished reading a 14 part internet 
article titled ; 
" A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF AFGANISTAN ".
 
You can access it by googling the above 
title.
 
Some very intersting info going back to the 1840's and a 
repeating pattern of attempts of imperialistic control over Afganistan, 1st by 
the British, using the very same tactics as now ; bribery, instigated coups, and 
direct military intervention.
The 1970's is probably the most interesting and 
informative period in my opinion.
