[Peace-discuss] a friend: Haiti's problem is overpopulation

Well... it's not so tenuous when Catholics (and others in power) prevent accessibility to birth control. As I recall, back in the day, CT permitted the sale of condoms only for the prevention of disease... and then there are the fights currently raging about the morning after pill... --Jenifer

The connection between overpopulation and Roman Catholicism is tenuous at best.

And the notion that people are so irrational as a group that they will have more children if they are less able to support them describes a human race so unfit that it would have long since ceased to exist. I find the argument that poverty creates excess birth rate to be unconvincing.

The only two factors that I know of that will keep population inside of sustainable bounds are education of women and availability of birth control.

Note that very Catholic Italy has no problem with excess birth rate, in spite of having the Vatican in their midst. The Pope may not approve, but Italian women are in the driver's seat on this issue. As they should be, since it their bodies that the Pope would like to conscript. It is a different kind of draft resistance.
