US drone attacks kill 11 in Pakistan
Fri, 15 Jan 2010 22:17:38 GMT
At least eleven people have been killed in two separate attacks within a few
hours by unmanned US drones in northwestern Pakistan.
Both attacks took place Friday in North Waziristan region on the border with
Afghanistan, Pakistani officials said.
The first attack hit Zanini village near the town of Mir Ali, about 30
kilometers (18 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town of restive North
Waziristan tribal district. The missile attack left five people dead.
The second attack targeted an alleged militant compound in the village of Bichi
in North Waziristan killing six people.
"At least six people, believed to be militants, were killed by the US drone
attack," an official responsible for the security of Miranshah was quoted by AFP
as saying.
The officials said that five US drones flew over at low altitude above the area
and two of the drones descended further and fired four missiles.
It was the ninth drone attack so far this year to be carried out by US drones.
Washington has stepped up its unmanned aerial vehicle strikes in Pakistan since
seven CIA agents were killed in neighboring Afghanistan.
The drones have killed mainly civilians despite the US claims that it's only
targeting militants in the tribal areas. The high civilian casualties resulting
from such attacks have sparked anti-American sentiments among Pakistanis.
On Thursday, Pakistani officials warned US special envoy Richard Halbrooke that
the attacks could jeopardize relations between the two countries.
