US emergency war budget sees 9bn for Afghan war
	Thu, 21 Jan 2010 00:17:44 GMT

The US Army's emergency war budget for 2011 will cover big orders for weapons
for a major build-up of troops in Afghanistan.

The Army has called for 33 billion dollars in emergency war funding, which
includes over nine billion dollars for Afghanistan, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The budget will go towards significant funding for new helicopters, ground
vehicles, missiles and ammunition, and upgrades to existing equipment.

A draft budget document shows a significant increase in purchases of unmanned
aerial vehicles, and stepped up intelligence and surveillance efforts.

It also includes 190 million dollars in Hellfire missile orders used by drones.

The US has stepped up drone attacks in northwestern Pakistan since a bombing
killed seven CIA agents in Afghanistan last month.

Over 700 people have died in nearly 80 drone strikes since August 2008. While,
Washington claims missiles target militants, reports say the attacks mostly kill
civilians.

Adding 30,000 additional US troops to Afghanistan will cost $30 billion during
fiscal year 2010, an early December report by The Center for Arms Control and
Non-Proliferation says.
