David,
You should have refused to remove it.

Subject: [Peace-discuss] Buttoned-down voting
I was met this morning at the polling station by a man with a booming voice who asked me my name, and loudly proclaimed it to the the waiting poll workers. He noticed the button that I had thoughtlessly worn in to the polling place, purchased at the AWARE table: "Socialism: the radical idea of sharing." I was asked to remove it, which of course I did, while giving him a completely spontaneous look that was somewhere between quizzical and annoyed. Before voting, I was asked to evaluate the efficiency of the experience, and I checked the box that said I had waited in line for zero minutes. After voting, and after having to be instructed on allowing a machine to suck up my ballot, I was awarded a sticker with a proper American flag. That, of course, is non-partisan and non-ideological, as good citizenship is meant to be. I re-fastened my button on leaving the polling place; one can only be a socialist in private.
They always need for you to know that they're keeping an eye on you.
DG
