Hi, Everyone,
I just want to thank everyone here on the local listserv. I have
been a lurker on this list for years, but I was also active on the
ground for a short period of time in CU. Between 2001 and 2004, I was
the president of the UN Association of Champaign County, and I was
known for singing Irish music at Mike & Molly's and as a member of the
band, Banish Misfortune. Saludos to Rich at the Esquire. I also
helped organize the "town hall" on the war in 2003 (?) on WILL.
I moved to CU in 2001, working for an IT company in Savoy. During
my short, 3 year stay, in CU, I met friends, played music, crashed
college parties, and was influenced by some good people. To the folks
at AWARE, especially, I express great gratitude. I am currently
faculty at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Thanks to the
influence of many people I met in CU, I decided to go back to school,
get my PhD in Geography, and get involved (again) in education. I
think I might end up staying here, as Evergreen is so progressive in
its education model. But I will say that the School for Designing a
Society influenced me while I was living in CU, through the many I
met that had been touched by that school. I feel a similar affinity
to Evergreen, though I did not partake in the work of SDS when I was
in CU. Perhaps to my detriment!
I wanted to thank you, and also let you know about my position in
academia, and say that the social environment of CU was critical to
where I am today. Any good I do in the world is owed, in part, to the
good people I debated and drank with in Champaign-Urbana.
Yours,
John Baldridge (now, "PhD")
