Unfortunately, they are probably not unique in their thinking; I would say 
that it probably characterizes a vast majority of the graduate student 
population just as it characterizes a vast majority of the general 
population, including members of the so-called working  and middle classes 
in the U.S.  Most (in contrast to the Phil Oaks comment that people are X 
degrees left of center until it affects them personally, then they are right 
of center) these days are X degrees right of center until it affects them 
personally when - like magic - they become progressive lefties.

Last night, on the train from Seattle to Vancouver BC, Stuart and I
met two inorganic chemistry graduate students from Michigan and we
discussed the GEO.
Three things made them cross their own union's picket line:
* they did not see why their union struck over child care -- after all
anyone who had children during graduate school had made bad mistakes
in their lives
* and THEIR department treats them well
* and they were told that they still had a responsibility to do their jobs

If it did not apply to them, they saw no reason to be in solidarity.

Yikes.
