November 9 is the date of Hitler's putsch (1923), Kristallnacht  
(1938), and the fall of the Berlin wall (1989). Guenter Grass writes  
of them in his poem "Novemberland":

"...Novembertote, lasst sie ruhn!
Wir haben mit uns Lebenden genug zu tun.
Doch diese sind nicht jenem, jene sind erwacht
und haben sich als Taeter das gleiche aehnlich ausgedacht.
Nicht abgebucht noch steuerfrei ist der Gewinn
aus Schuldenlast, fuer die ich haftbar bin."

Let the dead of November rest.
We have enough to do with us, the living.
For these are not those who have awakened
and conceived of themselves as perpetrators of the same thing.
Neither written-off nor tax-free is the profit
from the debts for which I am liable.
