As my previous report implied, I had thought that the movement would tail off for the moment. As planned in advance, there was a rally at the main branch of the Oakland Public Library - about 5-10 blocks from Oscar Grant Plaza - and then a march to the plaza. In anticipation of the march, the police had... removed all the barricades and left only small numbers of their own forces there.

There were some 2000 people at the general assembly - the largest ever!

The other thing to note is the demographics. Oakland is majority black and Latino. However, almost all political events in Oakland are 99% white - the usual white, mainly middle class activists. (Not criticizing them for this, just stating the fact.) The occupation has been largely white, but at least a lot of occupiers are not white. Also, and most significant, at the political events we are seeing the beginnings - just the very beginnings - of a shift.

I heard that the police hosed down the plaza itself, and it certainly is a muddy mess right now. I think it's unlikely that tents will go back up in the plaza tomorrow, but no way can the movement be said to be disappearing. I think there will be new occupations. Also, if this continues to build in the next couple of days, then it is very difficult to tell what will happen in the labor/occupy march and rally on Saturday. It might end up being a lot more dynamic than I thought. There are also plans afoot to curb the two chief capitulators... uh, I mean negotiators for the occupation movement who are meeting with the labor leadership.
