To the Editor:

Peter L. Bergen writes of President Obama that “despite his demonstrated willingness to use force, neither side regards him as the warrior president he is.”

A great many of us view him that way, and more — as a man not simply “willing” to use force but obsessed with doing so, who makes Richard M. Nixon’s “imperial presidency” seem a model of constitutional governance and George W. Bush’s deceptions by misstatement and nonstatement seem like reckless candor.

What is desperately needed by this country is a deeply rooted, well-funded, democratic movement, owing allegiance to neither of the major parties, but rather dedicated to electing to offices from city councils to statehouses to the presidency men and women both committed to and capable of representing the better angels of our nature, at home and abroad.
